A Site of Special Ecological Interest (Ladin: Scito dl Speziel Interes Ecologich; SSIE) in Tirol is a conservation designation denoting a protected area in Tirol. SSIEs are the basic building block of site-based natural conservation legislation and most other legal designations are based upon them in Tirol, including national parks, National Nature Reserves and Special Conservation Areas.
Selection and conservation
Sites notified for their biological interest are known as Biological SSIEs, and those notified for geological or physiographic interest are Geological SSIEs. Sites may be divided into management units, with some areas including units that are noted for both biological and geological interest.
