Nicolás Teodoro Cabañeras y Sanjurjo, 1st Duke of Cabañeras-Sanjurjo RMS (Creeperian: Նիծոլըս Տեոդորո Ծաբաթերաս յ Սանջփրջո, 1° Դփքփե դե Ծաբաթերաս-Սանջփրջո;[note 1] born 12 December 1985) is a Creeperian football manager who currently serves as the manager for CF San Salvador. He is a son of José Cabañeras Gutiérrez and a nephew of Augusto Cabañeras Gutiérrez, the minister of defense of Creeperopolis.
Cabañeras Sanjurjo attended the San Salvador Imperial Military Academy between 2003 and 2006, studying to become a military officer in the Creeperian Army, a tradition of his military family, however, he forewent a military career in favor of a professional football career. From 2006 to 2010, he played four seasons for CF Tuxtla Martínez as a center back. He played 43 matches and scored 2 goals during his four seasons playing in the Liga Imperial, however, he only played two full seasons, as he was injured early into his last two seasons. His injuries in 2008 and 2009 contributed to his decision to retire from playing professional football at the end of his contract.
In 2010, he returned to Tuxtla Martínez as a fitness coach, and then was promoted to assistant manager in 2011. He served in his position until 2013 when he joined CF Nuevo Xichútepa, serving as the club's assistant manager. Many sports analysts and fans believed that he would be appointed as the club's manager, however, he remained as assistant manager after the club hired Víctor Pacheco Durán as its new manager in July 2014. He remained with Nuevo Xichútepa until 2016, when he resigned and was hired as manager for Salvador, however, he resigned only five matches into the 2016–17 Liga Imperial. He was later hired as manager of Tuxtla Martínez in the Segunda División shortly after his resignation from Salvador.
After failing to earn promotion to the Liga Imperial at Tuxtla Martínez after three seasons, Cabañeras Sanjurjo left the club and was named as the manager for CF La'Libertad, also being tasked with earning promotion for the club. In his second season as manager of La'Libertad, he managed to finish in third place in the 2021 Segunda División Championship and led the club to promotion to the Liga Imperial for the 2021–22 season, however, the club failed to reach the 2022 Copa Creeperiano and he was released by the club, a move which was strongly criticized by sports commentators and Cabañeras Sanjurjo himself.
He was named as the manager of CF San Salvador on 2 July 2022. At the age of 38, he is the current youngest manager in the Liga Imperial. Additionally, he holds the record for the youngest ever Liga Imperial club manager at the age of 26 years and 275 days when he was briefly the interim manager of Tuxtla Martínez in 2012.
Cabañeras Sanjurjo has been accused of being corrupt by various international groups, claiming that he has amassed most of his wealth through embezzlement, money laundering, tax evasion, and fraud. Additionally, he has been accused of in nepotism, using his relation to the minister of defense to advance himself to prominent managerial positions in the Liga Imperial and to favorable contracts. He has also been accused of using his relation to the minister of defense to pressure politicians to pass laws which financially benefit the clubs he is managing.

Early life
Nicolás Teodoro Cabañeras y Sanjurjo was born on 12 December 1985 in Citalá, Xichútepa, Creeperopolis. His father is José Cabañeras Gutiérrez, then a military officer in the Creeperian Army, and his mother is Anastasia Sanjurjo Molina, then an employee for the ministry of law enforcement of Citalá. Upon his birth, he was bestowed the title of Marquess of Cabañeras-Gutiérrez by Emperor Adolfo V, as his father was the Duke of Cabañeras-Gutiérrez.
He attended the Emperor Romero I School for Boys from 1990 to 1998, and then the Don Padre José Delgado León School from 1999 to 2002. In 2003, he was enrolled in the San Salvador Imperial Military Academy, as his father wanted him to continue the family tradition of serving as a military officer in the Creeperian Army. His grandfather was the late Emmanuel Cabañeras Videla, who served as the minister of defense of Creeperopolis from 1976 until his death in 2002. He was succeeded by his son–Cabañeras Sanjurjo's uncle–Augusto Cabañeras Gutiérrez, who was in office at the time Cabañeras Sanjurjo enrolled in the military academy. There, he went on military observations to fronts of the Mara War (2004), Castillianan Insurgency (2005), and the San Carlos Islands Crisis (2006).
While at the military academy, Cabañeras Sanjurjo joined the Soldados Militares, the military academy's football program which is affiliated with the Creeperian National College Football Association (AFNCC). He played for the program as a center back throughout his time enrolled. He played in 33 matches and scored 2 goals. In his fourth year, Cabañeras Sanjurjo decided to forego becoming a military officer, and instead decided to dedicate his career to playing professional football in the Liga Imperial, the country's top football league. Despite resistance from his father and uncle, who himself wished the play professional football rather than become a military officer, he was eventually allowed to pursue his a professional football career. Upon his graduation on 15 September 2006 from the military academy, he was honorarily promoted to the rank of Major and awarded the grand collar of the Imperial Order of Romerism by Emperor Alexander II.
Professional football career
2006–07
After graduating, CF Tuxtla Martínez was the first club to offer Cabañeras Sanjurjo a contract to play for their club. On 22 September 2006, he signed a 4-year ₡360 million colón,[note 2] contract. He played his first match for the club on 8 October 2006 against CF San Pedro. In his first match, Cabañeras Sanjurjo successfully prevented a goal from being scored by San Pedro forward Julio Marés Dávalos, however, Tuxtla Martínez eventually lost the match by a score of 1–2. For the remainder of the 2006–07 season, Cabañeras Sanjurjo played in 15 more matches.

The club failed to qualify for the 2007 Copa Creeperiano, as it finished in 9th place, one spot below the qualification threshold. The club automatically qualified for the 2007 Copa del Emperador, and Cabañeras Sanjurjo played in both matches the club played: the 3–0 victory over CF Guadalajara and the 1–3 loss to CF Puerto Atlántida.
2007–08
In the 2007–08 season, Cabañeras Sanjurjo recorded his first goal–a last minute equalizing header against CF Masario on 11 November 2007. He also recorded his only career own goal, scoring for CF Adolfosburg in a 0–4 loss on 20 January 2008. He played in 17 matches during the season. The club qualified for the 2008 Copa Creeperiano, and he played in all three group stage matches, however, each match ended in a loss: 0–2 to CF Chalatenango, 1–2 to CF Salvador, and 0–1 to CF Victoria. Like the previous year, he again played in two matches during the 2008 Copa del Emperador: a 5–0 victory against CF Bautista and a 2–4 loss on penalties after a 1–1 draw to Salvador.
2008–09
Cabañeras Sanjurjo was injured halfway through the 2008–09 season, tearing his knee ligaments during the 7 December 2008 match against CF La'Victoria. He did not return to play for the remainder of the season, having only played 7 matches and scoring 1 goal until his injury. He also did not play in the Copa Creeperiano or Copa del Emperador for that year. In a press conference in late-June 2009, he stated that he intended to continue playing for the club, stating that he believed he would be able to continue playing despite his injury that season. On 20 June 2009, his uncle awarded him the grand collar-grade of the Imperial Order of Valor and Bravery for his recovery from his knee injury.
2009–10
Cabañeras Sanjurjo suffered another injury in only the third round of the 2009–10 season, again tearing ligaments in his knee during the 14 September 2009 match against San Pedro. He did not play another match for the remainder of the Liga Imperial season, nor during the Copa Creeperiano. He did return to play one last match, Tuxtla Martínez's third match during the 2010 Copa del Emperador. Despite losing 1–2 against Chalatenango, Cabañeras Sanjurjo scored the club's lone goal. On 30 June 2010, the final day of the season and the last day of his 4-year contract, Cabañeras Sanjurjo announced his retirement from professional football citing his prior knee injuries. He did, however, state that he wished to return to coach for the club.
Managerial career
Tuxtla Martínez (assistant and interim)
On 19 July 2010, Cabañeras Sanjurjo was hired by Tuxtla Martínez to be a fitness coach for the club. Throughout the year, he maintained his employment with the club. In part due to his coaching, the club qualified for the 2011 Copa Creeperiano, however, the club lost all three group stage matches. On 1 July 2011, he was named as the club's assistant manager after the departure of Ismael Ramírez Acosta, the club's previous assistant manager, as he was hired as the manager for CF Denilla.
Cabañeras Sanjurjo served as assistant manager throughout the 2011–12 season and helped the team make another appearance in the 2012 Copa Creeperiano. The club won two matches and lost one, and qualified for the semifinals, however, the club lost to Salvador, and later lost to CF Nuevo Xichútepa in the third place match.
He returned as assistant manager the following season, however, on 12 September 2012, manager Ignacio Fernández Quiñónez was murdered by a fan who blamed him for the club's losses in the Copa Creeperiano. The murder caused the club to appoint Cabañeras Sanjurjo to serve as the club's interim manager until a new official manager could be appointed. As interim manager, Cabañeras Sanjurjo led the club in 12 matches to 6 wins, 3 draws, and 3 losses. He later returned to being the assistant manager, as the club hired former-CF Citalá manager Fernando López Arenallo to officially replace Fernández Quiñónez on 3 December 2012. The club qualified for the 2013 Copa Creeperiano, but did not advance to the semifinals, losing two matches and drawing one.
Nuevo Xichútepa (assistant)
At the end of the 2012–13 season, Cabañeras Sanjurjo announced that he would not return to Tuxtla Martínez, as he had been hired as the assistant manager for Nuevo Xichútepa. At the time, manager José Revuelto Obregón was under pressure to produce better results, and the club hired Cabañeras Sanjurjo as a potential replacement in the event Revuelto Obregón was sacked. At the end of the season, Xichútepa finished in 5th and failed to advance past the 2014 Copa Creeperiano group stage, and as a result, Revuelto Obregón was sacked as manager and Cabañeras Sanjurjo was named as interim manager until 1 July 2014.
Although he was planned to be Revuelto Obregón's replacement, he was eventually relegated back to the position of interim manager, as the club hired former-San Nicolás manager Víctor Pacheco Durán, considered to be one of the greatest Creeperian footballers of all time. That season and the following season, Xichútepa saw greatly improved performances, and on 5 June 2016, Cabañeras Sanjurjo submitted his resignation from the club as he sought the opportunity to serve as a club's manager, rather than as merely its assistant manager.
Salvador
On 3 July 2016, Cabañeras Sanjurjo was hired to be the new manager of Salvador, signing a 3-year contract. Although he finally got the managerial position he wanted, he did not have much history with the club. He only led the club for five matches until resigning on 20 September 2016. He was replaced by his assistant manager, Osiel Ortega Parejas, as interim manager for the club.
Return to Tuxtla Martínez
On 4 October 2016, Cabañeras Sanjurjo signed a 3-year contract with Tuxtla Martínez to serve as the club's manager. López Arenallo was sacked two weeks prior for poor results and for allowing the club to be relegated at the end of the 2015–16 Liga Imperial season. Now that the club was competing in the Segunda División, there were only 16 matches to play in the season, and to attain promotion back to the Liga Imperial, the club had to finish third or better in the Segunda División Championship. As manager, Cabañeras Sanjurjo led the club to 9 wins, 3 draws, and 4 losses, and the club qualified for the 2017 Segunda División Championship. Tuxtla Martínez defeated CF Anadesa by a score of 4–0 in the round of 16, however, the club lost 1–3 to CF San Vicente in the quarterfinals. In the 2017 Copa del Emperador, the club won all 6 stage 2 group matches and automatically qualified for stage 4, however, the club lost 1–4 to Adolfosburg in the round of 32.

Cabañeras Sanjurjo stated that the upcoming 2017–18 Segunda División season would be "promising" for the club, however, various injuries were suffered by key players, such as defender Antonio Cedillo Valdéz and forward Agustín Enríquez Tassis. The injuries led to a worse performance from the year prior–4 wins, 5 draws, and 7 losses–and the club failed to qualify for the 2018 Segunda División Championship. In the 2018 Copa del Emperador, the club only won a single match, losing 3 and drawing 2, and failed to advance to either stage 3 or stage 4.
Before the start of the 2018–19 Segunda División season, Cabañeras Sanjurjo managed to acquire Lyoan forward Martin Ngwuenta to play for the club. He believed that Ngwuenta would be what the club needed to be the final push to help the club be promoted to the Liga Imperial. Cabañeras Sanjurjo led the club to a comeback season, attaining 8 wins, 4 draws, and 4 losses. In the 2019 Segunda División Championship, Tuxtla Martínez defeated CF Santa María by a score of 4–2 in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, he led the club to a 3–2 comeback win against San Vicente and advanced to the semifinals. There, the club lost to CF San Miguel by a score of 1–3, and the club had to compete in the third place match against CF Santa Ana for the final promotion spot. Tuxtla Martínez led 2–0 into the second half, however, Santa Ana managed to score twice, and Tuxtla Martínez eventually lost 2–3 in overtime; Santa Ana was promoted while Tuxtla Martínez failed to be promoted.
After the loss, club management announced that Cabañeras Sanjurjo would not be offered a contract extension, believing that he would not be enough to lead the club to promotion, and that the 2019 Copa del Emperador would be the last competition he would lead the club in on his contract. In the Copa del Emperador, he led the club to 3 wins and 3 draws in stage 2, and the club advanced to stage 3, where he led the club to 1 win and 1 draw. The club qualified for stage 4, where they defeated CF Denshire by a score of 1–0 in the round of 32, in what was considered the biggest upset of the tournament. The same success was not replicated in the round of 16, where the club lost 0–3 to CF Cámarillo.
La'Libertad
On 1 July 2019, Cabañeras Sanjurjo was named as the new manager of CF La'Libertad. In his first season with the club, he led the club to 8 wins, 6 draws, and 2 losses. The club was considered heavy favorites entering the 2020 Segunda División Championship, however, in the round of 16, La'Libertad lost to Santa María in a 1–2 upset after extra time. In the 2020 Copa del Emperador, the club won only 2 group matches, drawing 1 and losing 3. The results meant that the club did not qualify for either stage 3 or stage 4 of the tournament.
On 16 June 2020, a gunman opened fire upon Cabañeras Sanjurjo in an assassination attempt. Cabañeras Sanjurjo was unharmed and the gunman, 22 year-old José Antonio Cañas y Gómez, was arrested. He later claimed that the assassination was meant to punish Cabañeras Sanjurjo for losing in the round of 16. Due to his attempt on the life of Cabañeras Gutiérrez's nephew and Cañas Gómez's affiliation to Mara Salvatrucha, Cañas Gómez was publicly executed by a firing squad on 17 June 2020 in La'Libertad. The assassination attempt and subsequent execution of the suspect ended up being an unexpected distraction from the events of Operation Banana, which would happen the night after Cañas Gómez was executed.
In the 2020–21 Segunda División season, Cabañeras Sanjurjo led the club to 9 wins, 4 draws, and 3 losses, again being considered heavy favorites for promotion. The club managed to defeat Santa María in the round of 16 by a score of 1–0 in a revenge match for the loss the year prior. In the quarterfinals, La'Libertad managed to narrowly defeat CF Sonsonate by a score of 1–0 in extra time due to a 117th minute goal by Carlos Portillo Leal. In the semifinals, La'Libertad was defeated by San Pedro by a score of 1–2, and the club was forced to compete for the last promotion spot against CF Panachor. In the third place match, the two clubs finished 1–1 after 90 minutes, and drew 2–2 after extra time, forcing penalties. In the penalty shootout, La'Libertad won 4–3, and earned promotion to the Liga Imperial. In the subsequent 2021 Copa del Emperador, the club won 3 matches, drew 2, and lost 1, and advanced to stage 3, where the club lost both matches.
Cabañeras Sanjurjo stated that he felt confident that he would be able to lead the club to the 2022 Copa Creeperiano in the upcoming 2021–22 Liga Imperial season, and that at the minimum, he would keep the club away from relegation and the relegation playoff. After the first match, the club was in the 4th position overall, however, the club never returned to that position as the club decreased to 7th the following match. From the 14th to 29th match, the club was in the 8th position, barely qualifying for the Copa Creeperiano, however, the club lost its last match while Masario won its last match, and La'Libertad was eliminated from competing in the 2022 Copa Creeperiano by 3 points. The club ended the season with 13 wins, 4 draws, and 13 losses.
As a result of his failure to reach the Copa Creeperiano, club management announced that Cabañeras Sanjurjo would not be offered a contract extension, a decision which was heavily criticized by Cabañeras Sanjurjo himself and various Creeperian sports commentators, believing that he was the reason the club was promoted in the first place. In the 2022 Copa del Emperador, the club defeated CF Santa Catalina by a score of 5–0 in the round of 32, but lost by a score of 1–3 to Nuevo Xichútepa in the round of 16. His tenure with the club ended on 30 June 2022.[1]
San Salvador
On 2 July 2022, Cabañeras Sanjurjo was hired as the new manager of CF San Salvador after the end of Eduardo Quijada Inéz's contract.[2]
Personal life
Family
Cabañeras Sanjurjo married Claudia Payés Rivera in July 2008. The couple has three children:

Cabañeras Sanjurjo is the eldest of four children, with his younger siblings being Luisa, Maximiliano, and Carmen. At his birth, he was bestowed the title of Marquess of Cabañeras-Gutiérrez by Emperor Adolfo V. Later, on 15 September 2016, he convinced Emperor Alexander II to promote him to the title of Duke of Cabañeras-Sanjurjo after his appointment as manager of CF Salvador. His son, Augusto, was also bestowed the title of Marquess of Cabañeras-Sanjurjo.
Accusations of corruption
His net worth is estimated to be around ₡960 million colóns,[note 3] making him one of the wealthiest football managers in Creeperopolis. Several foreign critics accuse Cabañeras Sanjurjo of accumulating his net worth through embezzlement, money laundering, tax evasion, and fraud, accusations which Cabañeras Sanjurjo has ignored, while Adán Dávalos Santángel, the minister of the treasury, has stated that the accusations are "baseless and false".
He has gained significant name recognition due to his relation to the minister of defense, Cabañeras Gutiérrez. Additionally, he is a third cousin one-removed of José Sáenz Morales, the leader of the Creeperian Initiative, and is a fourth cousin of Alexander II, the reigning Emperor of Creeperopolis. His close association with his uncle and distant cousins has led to rumors and accusations of corruption and nepotism, where he has been alleged to have been granted favorable contracts and positions within the Liga Imperial. Foreign groups have also accused Cabañeras Sanjurjo of using his relation to the minister of defense in pressuring politicians to pass laws which financially benefit the clubs he is managing, allegations which he has also ignored.
