The Monsilva national football team has represented Monsilva in international football since its founding in 1942, with its first international match being in *TBD*. It is controlled by the Monsilva Football Association (MFA), the governing body for football in Monsilva, which is affiliated with the Ostlandet Football League. Monsilva competes in two international football championships, the OFL Continental Cup and the Terraconservan Cup.

Monsilva's home ground is the Luhai National Football Stadium in Luhai City, Luhai. It is Monsilva's largest stadium by size and capacity with 83,000 seats. Monsilva's training headquarters is located in Neibu, Luhai. The team's manager is Ming Shen, whilst the captain is Hsin Mai.

The national team has consisted of many different players over the years, and the majority usually play for teams in the Monsilvan Super League or in other top divisions across Terraconserva. Over one third of players that have ever played for the national team have also played for Monsilva's most successful domestic team, Luhai City F.C..

History

Overview

The Monsilva national football team was founded in March 1942 by On Ho and Guang Tsou, two of Monsilva's first professional football players. Association football was introduced to Monsilva in 1921 by tourists and immigrants coming from countries where football was already a big thing. It soon caught on thanks to the existing popularity of cuju, a Monsilvan sport that was very similar to football. Football made cuju practically extinct by 1941, and one year later, the national football team was established to compete in international competitions. At first, the team found little success, but as football gained more and more popularity in Monsilva, more money was invested into the game and soon came better trained players and managers.

After a surge in popularity of football from the 1983 OFL Continental Cup, in which Monsilva won for the second time in a row, football became the most popular sport in Monsilva, surpassing Yuchio. This lead to extra funding and advertising being directed towards football teams in Monsilva, including the Monsilva national football team. Football has remained the most popular sport in Monsilva, and has a visible influence on Monsilvan sporting culture. In 2019, the Monsilvan national football team were the most watched sports team in Monsilva. In 2020, they were the second most watched, being barely surpassed by Luhai City F.C..

Ostlandet Football League

Monsilva joined the Ostlandet Football League as a founding member in 1961, and attended the league's inaugural continental cup in 1967. Initially, although the tournaments were gaining popularity in Monsilva, they did not gather the audience numbers they were originally hoping for. However, in the following cup in 1971, the Monsilvan team came third place. This position managed to begin Monsilva's fast transition into becoming a successful international team.

The final boost for the popularity of football in Monsilva, was with the unprecedented success of the Monsilvan team in the 1979, 1983 and 1987 OFL Continental Cups, in which Monsilva won all three. In 1983, Monsilva became the most successful OFL team, and has remained so since. The team won the OFL twice more in 2003 and 2015.

In 1987, Monsilva hosted the OFL Continental Cup for the first time in Luhai, Tsingyi and Menchi. It would then host the tournament again, 36 years later, in 2023 in Luhai and Amking.

Nickname(s)

In Monsilva, the national team is commonly referred to as Lóng Zhīduì or Dragon's Team. This name referenced the traditional dragon in Monsilvan culture, which are fierce and represent strength and good luck. The name was first used by Xiong Mao, a radio presenter on MBS, who was the first person to present football on radio in Monsilva. He used it whilst commenting on an ongoing match involving the national team. The term Dragons became widely used after that point by other presenters and the general public, and is still commonly used in Monsilva to refer to the team.

Crest

Monsilva national football team crest.png

The Monsilva national football team crest consists of a yellow Monsilvan dragon above an Association football ball, with a tricolor of the three colours of the Flag of Monsilva behind it. At the top of the crest is the acronym MFA, standing for the Monsilva Football Association. The dragon is the main symbol of the team, having represented them since it became a nickname for the team in the 1940s. The team's kit is emblazoned with a white version of the dragon on the first colors, and a blue version on the second colors.

Colors

Monsilva's first colors are red, blue and white. The colors are taken directly from the Flag of Monsilva. The first colors show red more prominently than white. The second colors are the same, but are displayed in a different order, with white being more prominent instead of red.

Home stadium

Until the Luhai National Football Stadium was built in 1975, the Monsilva national football team had played in different stadiums all across the country. For the first year after its establishment in 1942, the team only played on outdoor fields as there were not many good football stadiums that had been built in Monsilva yet. However, in 1943, the first proper football stadiums were built, with the largest being in Zhangye, Xiaogu known as the Zhangye Stadium. It was used by the team until August 1967, when they moved to the original Amking Arena which had a much larger capacity than the Zhangye Stadium and saw lots of popularity as the large Amking population were much more interested in the matches played than the citizens living in Zhangye. The Amking Arena was not far from where the current Amking City Stadium, the largest football stadium in Amking, is now located.

When the Amking Arena burnt down in October 1974, the national team had lost their stadium. However, the team had already reserved the Luhai National Football Stadium which was being built. As they had made that reservation, the team did not officially declare a new stadium until the LNFS was finished in January 1975. Since then, the national team have played all their home matches at the Luhai National Football Stadium and have since likely made Luhai one of the most football-oriented states in the country.
