Lieutenant (Ladin: Leutnante; Lt) is a junior commissioned officer rank in the Ground Forces and Rifles. It ranks above Officer Deputy and below Upper Lieutenant. It has an international ranking code of OF-1 and it is the junior subaltern rank. Unlike some armed forces which use second lieutenant, the Tiroler rank is simply lieutenant, with no ordinal attached. The rank is equivalent to that of a pilot officer in the Tiroler Air Corps.

The Lieutenant is the lowest CO rank. Mandatory to be promoted to that OF1b-rank is a six terms course of high school studies at the Theresian Military Academy in the Innsbruck Neustadt. The studies are focused on "Military Command and Control" (C2) and the academy-leaver graduate to Bachelor.

The career in the Rifles is structured in a different way. Here the modular education comprises the so-called one-year volunteer year as well as several courses, seminars, and exercises with a final aptitude test. After an overall service time of five years the promotion to Lieutenant is possible.

Moreover, the appointment designation Lieutenant is possible for leading officials (E1) of the Tiroler executive, e.g. the Tiroler Police and prison authority personnel.

Usage

In the 21st-century Tiroler Ground Forces, the rank is ordinarily held for up to three years. A typical appointment for a lieutenant might be the command of a platoon of approximately thirty soldiers.

Before 1953, when the Rifles switched to using the current rank of "lieutenant", they used "second lieutenant".

Form of address

In Tirol, "Lieutenant" is a rank which is not used as a form of address, unlike "Captain" and higher ranks. A Lieutenant called Smith is addressed and referred to as Mr Smith.
