Joseph Kyangyu Ashona was a Lyoan politician and revolutionary who served as the First President of Lyoa after participating in the Lyoan Revolution that overthrew the New Lyoa Kingdom. Kyangyu was selected political leader of the Lyoan Revolutionary Alliance, and was selected by the Alliance for the presidency. He was elected in the 1967 Lyoan general election unopposed, as the election essentially served as a confirmation of the government. Ideologically an anti-monarchist, Kyangyu was politically active for most of his life protesting against the New Lyoa Kingdom. Throughout this time, he was criticized by the monarchy as an "ethnonationalist", as the monarchy was Lakku, while he was Kindu.
