The Imperial Council v National Council football matches, also known as the Real 1936 Terraconservan Cup (Creeperian Spanish: Copa Tierraconserveño de Verdad de 1936) in Creeperopolis, and sometimes ironically referred to as the Creeperian Civil War, was a series of three international football matches which were held in opposition to and protest of the 1936 Terraconservan Cup. The matches were held between two squads which were sent by the Catholic Imperial Restoration Council (Imperial Council) and National Council for Peace and Order (National Council) to represent Creeperopolis in the 1936 Terraconservan Cup, however, when they were denied entry due to neither team participating in the qualifications for the tournament and Creeperopolis was serving a ban for an outbreak of violent riots during the 1932 Terraconservan Cup.

After three matches held at the Bandung Lautan Api Stadium in Bandung, Karimun, the Imperial Council were self-declared as the victors of the tournament, defeating the National Council 22–18 on aggregate. The final scores of the matches were 11–4, 9–4, and 7–5, with the Imperial Council winning the first and last while the National Council won the second. The Imperial Council squad was praised as heroes by the Imperial Council's government, while the National Council's squad obtained asylum in Karimun, fearful of certain execution in Creeperopolis. The National Football Association (ANF) and CONFUSUR consider the three matches to be official matches played by the national team, while the Terraconservan Cup dismissed the matches as unofficial.

The matches led to Creeperopolis being banned from the 1940 Terraconservan Cup as well for setting up a protest tournament in opposition to the Terraconservan Cup. Neither council sent a squad to the 1940 Terraconservan Cup, and Creeperopolis did not return to competing in the tournament until the 1952 Terraconservan Cup, where Creeperopolis came in second place.

Background

1932 Terraconservan Cup

Creeperopolis hosted the 1932 Terraconservan Cup in San Salvador as the champions of the 1928 Terraconservan Cup. Despite being favorites to repeat as champions, the Creeperopolis national team was defeated 0–4 by Tirol in the semifinals. As a result of the loss, violent riots erupted in San Salvador, leading to many deaths and injuries, and as a result, the final match was moved to Adolfosburg by the Terraconservan Cup Executive Commission. Additionally, due to the riots, Creeperopolis was banned from competing in the 1936 Terraconservan Cup. Despite appealing the ban, Creeperopolis was denied a lifting of the ban.

Creeperian Civil War

On 2 January 1933, Creeperian Emperor Adolfo IV died of Creeperian Malaria, and upon his death, two of his sons both proclaimed themselves to be Emperor: Romero I and Miguel VII. Romero I was supported by the right-wing Creeperian Conservative Coalition (CCC) and Miguel VII was supported by the left-wing People's Social Coalition (PSC), and when the military split along ideological lines, the Creeperian Civil War began between the Catholic Imperial Restoration Council (Imperial Council, Romerists) and the National Council for Peace and Order (National Council, Miguelists). Both factions saw themselves as the legitimate government of Creeperopolis.

Lead up to matches

In 1936, despite not being allowed to participate in qualifications due to still being banned, both the Imperial and National Councils sent a team to Karimun to compete in the 1936 Terraconservan Cup. Upon arriving, both teams, which both claimed to represent Creeperopolis, were denied entry by the Terraconservan Cup Executive Commission, citing the ban that Creeperopolis was serving.

In protest of the Terraconservan Cup Executive Commission upholding the ban, the managers of both teams which were sent, Juan Meléndez Gutiérrez (Imperial Council) and Enrique Montesinos Moreno (National Council) decided to play against each other in protest of the Terraconservan Cup Executive Commission and to prove which government was the legitimate government of Creeperopolis. Both teams searched for a venue which would host their matches, and the Bandung Lautan Api Stadium Corporation offered to host both teams in the Stadium Bandung Lautan Api in Bandung, Karimun. There, both teams practiced and attracted interest from students in the town from several universities, including the Catholic University of Atma Jaya, the Royal Academy of Patravan, and the Bandung Institute of Polytechnic. Many of the students, who were interested in the sport, could either not afford to pay for tickets for the Terraconservan Cup or could not travel to the tournament and grew an interest in the upcoming matches between the Imperial Council and National Council as a replacement for the Terraconservan Cup. The Imperial and National Council agreed that three matches would be held: one on the day the Terraconservan Cup group stage began (19 June 1936), one on the day the Terraconservan Cup knockout stage began (28 June 1936), and one on the day after the Terraconservan Cup final (6 July 1936).

Squads

Imperial Council

The Imperial Council starters.

The squad of the Imperial Council consisted of sixteen players: one goalkeeper, five defenders, six midfielders, and four forwards. Some of the players had some experience with the Creeperopolis national team, while some had no prior experience with the national team. Forward Federico Rivas Velázquez was chosen as the squad's captain, as he had prior experience with the national team, competing at the 1928 Terraconservan Cup, 1929 Hispanic Cup, 1930 Copa Sur, 1931 Hispanic Cup, and 1932 Terraconservan Cup for a total of twenty-three caps. Other players who competed in the three latter tournaments include goalkeeper Carlos Villarreal Dávalos, defender Alfonso Jiménez Castro, and midfielder Adolfo Suñer Jiménez. The squad's manager was Juan Meléndez Gutiérrez, who managed the Creeperopolis national team to victories in the 1928 Terraconservan Cup and 1930 Copa Sur. He was chosen as the manager, as the manager who succeeded him, Simón Dávalos Figueroa, was killed in 1934 as a part of the Creeperian Civil War.

The squad of the National Council consisted of sixteen players: one goalkeeper, five defenders, five midfielders, and five forwards. Like the Imperial Council, some of its players had experience with the national team while others did not. The squad's captain was Jorge Herrera Galdámez who had accumulated twenty-three caps with the national team at the 1930 Copa Sur, 1931 Hispanic Cup, and 1932 Terraconservan Cup. Other players with significant experience on the national team include Isaías Santín Cruz and Miguel Salinas Enríquez. First match

Summary

The first match began on 19 June 1936 at 16:00 and was refereed by Joko Irawan, a student from the Bandung Institute of Polytechnic who had knowledge of the rules of association football, as no professional referee would be willing to referee the match. A crowd of an estimated 13,000 people, most of whom were college students and residents of Bandung, was in attendance.[1]

Rivas Velázquez scored a quick goal in the second minute to give the Imperial Council an early 1–0 lead. The Imperial Council was awarded a penalty at the fifteenth minute and was converted by Suñer Jiménez. The National Council responded with a twentieth minute goal by Saúl Alvarado Murillo, but the Imperial Council returned their lead to two goals when National Council defender José Acosta Herrera scored an own goal. Rivas Velázquez scored another goal in the twenty-third minute, followed by a goal by Herrera Galdámez in the thirty-ninth minute. The final goal of the first half was scored by Javíer González Videla, and the Imperial Council went into the second half with a 5–2 lead.[1]

Returning from half time, Herrera Galdámez quickly scored a goal in the forty-sixth minute, cutting the Imperial Council's lead to 5–3, which was further reduced to 5–4 when Juan Umaña Revelo scored in the forty-ninth minute. Unfortunately for the National Council, they would not score a single goal for the rest of the match, while the Imperial Council scored six more goals: González Videla in the fifty-eighth minute, Fernando Dávalos Serrano in the sixty-third minute, Rivas Velázquez in the sixty-eighth and eighty-fourth minute, Gustavo Guerrero Tejón in the seventieth minute, and a final goal by Dávalos Serrano one minute into stoppage time. The match ended in a 11–4 victory for the Imperial Council.[1]

Second match

Summary

The second match was held on 28 June 1936 and was refereed by Budiman Wicaksono under the same circumstances as Irawan. A crowd of an estimated 18,000 people was in attendance.[2]

Rivas Velázquez quickly scored another second minute goal, but ten minutes later, Villarreal Dávalos, the Imperial Council's goalkeeper, scored an own goal to bring the match to 1–1. Then, Herrera Galdámez scored three consecutive goals in the sixteenth, nineteenth, and twenty-seventh minute, ending the first half of the match with the National Council leading 4–1. Despite further Imperial Council goals by Guerrero Tejón in the forty-seventh minute, Suñer Jiménez in the sixty-eighth minute, and Fidel Ureña Piñon in the eighty-seventh minute, the National Council outscored the Imperial Council 9–4 thanks to goals from Herrera Galdámez in the fifty-sixth and eighty-ninth minutes, Alvarado Murillo in the sixty-fourth minute, Alberto Zoto Quijada in the eighty-third minute, and Alfonso Gutiérrez Salinas two minutes into stoppage time.[2]

"Championship" match

Summary

The final match occurred on 6 July 1936, the day after Paleocacher defeated Castilliano by a score of 2–1. The match was branded as the "Championship Match" and a crowd of 26,000 people attended the match, some of whom were spectators of the actual matches of the Terraconservan Cup who were curious to the ongoing matches occurring in Bandung. The match was refereed by Kartika Ditya, and despite initial objections from both teams as she was a woman, the match proceeded as scheduled.[3]

As with in the prior two matches, Rivas Velázquez scored in the second minute, but Herrera Galdámez quickly responded in the fifth minute with a goal of his own. The National Council took a 3–1 lead when Santín Cruz scored in the twenty-third and thirty-third minutes. The Imperial Council responded when Rivas Velázquez scored in the thirty-fifth minute, and the match went into half time with the National Council leading 3–2. Vicente Figueroa Ulloa scored a penalty at the forty-eighth minute, making the match 3–3 early into the second half. Umaña Revelo scored in the sixty-sixth minute, which was responded by a score by Rivas Velázquez in the seventy-eighth minute. With Simón Casanova Moreno scoring in the eightieth minute and Alfonso Zorro León scoring in the eighty-third minute, the match entered stoppage time level at 5–5, however, Rivas Velázquez scored one minute into stoppage time and Zorro León scored three minutes into stoppage time, and the match ended in a 7–5 victory for the Imperial Council.[3]

Aftermath

The Imperial Council defeated the National Council 22–18 on aggregate,[note 1] and Meléndez Gutiérrez declared the Imperial Council to be the true world champions of football in 1936, declaring the Paleocacherian victory to be null and void. Romero I congratulated the squad on its victory and awarded each of its players and coaching staff with the knight grade of the Imperial Order of Alfonso the Great. The National Council did not acknowledge the result of the matches, and in fear of almost certain execution if they returned to Creeperopolis by both governments, the players and coaching staff of the National Council requested asylum in Karimun, which was granted.

The National Football Association (ANF) and CONFUSUR consider the three matches played to be official matches, while the Terraconservan Cup dismisses the matches as unofficial matches. Despite their symbolic importance over the National Council, the matches are rarely commemorated, as the championship match occurred on the date which would later be the date that Romero I was killed during the Siege of San Salvador.

Creeperopolis was subsequently banned again for the 1940 Terraconservan Cup for the protest tournament which was held in opposition to the 1936 Terraconservan Cup. Neither the Imperial nor National Council sent any squads to the 1940 Terraconservan Cup, as by that point in the civil war, neither side saw it as acceptable to sent a squad to play in an international tournament.

Notes

  1. The high scoring of the matches occurred as a result of a large degree of inexperience from many of the players and a general lack of seriousness undertaken during the matches.
