The Granada Initiative (Salvadoran: Iniciativa Granada), officially known as the Initiative of the Revitalization and Restoration of the Infrastructure Along the Granada River (Iniciativa de Dinamització i Restauració de la Infraestructura del Riu Granada), was a plan instituted by Salvadoran President Orlando Pareja Palau on 5 February 2020.

Initiative

The Granada Initiative was Salvadoran President Orlando Pareja Palau's plan to "revitalize" and "reimagine" the roads and highways along the Granada River. The proposal also sought to enlarge El Salvador's railroad network, renovate and expand the Josep Esdres Boixadé i Callo International Airport, and build new airports in El Mozote, El Congo, and Guatacate.[1] The Tribunals Generals, the legislature of El Salvador, voted 73–11 in favor of the Granada Initiative.

Construction and redevelopment on El Salvador's major highways began in late-February 2020, starting with the Granada Transnational Highway which connected Monrito, Ñancahuazú, in southern El Salvador, to Pario, Vallepital, in northern El Salvador. The highway was expanded from one lane in each direction to three lanes in each direction, with some parts reaching up to four lanes in each direction, increasing the highway's capacity and lowering congestion in and out of major cities. The widening of the full length of the highway was completed in December 2021. The Troncal El Paraíso connecting the city of El Paraíso to El Congo was similarly expanded between April 2020 and March 2021, as was the Calle Azul, connecting El Paraíso and El Calabozo between July 2020 and January 2022.
