Era hijo del rey Luis Felipe I de Francia y de María Amelia de Borbón-Dos Sicilias, y contrajo matrimonio con la infanta Luisa Fernanda de Borbón, hija del rey Fernando VII de España y hermana de la reina Isabel II, que concedió al duque de Montpensier el título de infante de España.
