Gjorkan energy consumption by Fuel in 2021

  Hydroelectricity (28.6%)
  Coal (23.9%)
  Natural Gas (12.6%)
  Nuclear (10.1%)
  Wind (9.8%)
  Solar (8.7%)
  Oil (5.4%)
  Other (0.9%)

Energy in Gjorka is incredibly diverse and is generated mainly from Hydroelectricity and Coal which combined are the source for over half of all energy consumed in Gjorka. Gjorka is net importer of energy as roughly only 93% of Gjorka's annually consumption of 401,345 gigawatt hours originate in Gjorka. Fossil fuels represent approximately 42% of energy consumption with the largest being coal at 23.9%. This number is down significantly from 2000 when they represented 63% of energy consumption. By contrast renewable energy represents approximately 47% of energy consumption with Hydroelectricity by far the largest producer at 23.9%. Solar and Wind power have seen a significant rise in the last decade in large part due to activism from groups like the Green Party and Forward Gjorka.

Primary energy sources

Hydroelectricity

Hydroelectricity overtook Coal as Gjorka's primary energy source in 2013. The reduction of coal use had been steadily declined since, however under President Vanderburg it was made a priority to limit coal use and promote renewable energy. Hydroelectricity currently represents 28.6% of all energy production in Gjorka.

A majority of the dams generating the hydroelectric are located in Western Gjorka along the An Ball Mór Mountains in western Gjorka. Specifically, the district of Protterland produces a majority of Gjorka's hydroelectric power. The largest dam in Gjorka is the Sliabh Glas Dam in western Protterland which generates 4,025 megawatts per hour.

All of Gjorka's dams are owned federally by the Gjorkan government however, the management of dams is often leased out to private companies. Roughly 65% of the hydroelectric power produced in Gjorka is produced by a dam run by a private company. The largest such companies are Solas Uisce and Brí Sruth who own roughly half of all privately-owned dams in Gjorka.

Coal

For much of Gjorka's history, Coal was the largest producer of energy. Located mostly in the mountains of Western Gjorka, Coal Towns, towns that supported coal mining operations, dotted the landscape. However, with the rise of other forms of power such as hydroelectricity, nuclear and renewables the use of coal has steadily declined in Gjorka. In 2000, Coal represented 40% of all energy produced in Gjorka, however that number has dropped to just 23.9% in 2022. This primarily due to measures implemented by Presidents Wallace and Vanderburg to reduce coal use in Gjorka. Major parties like Forward Gjorka and the Green Party now have the ban of coal by 2025 in their parties' manifestos.

Gjorka's coal production is located mostly in the mountains of Gjorka with Protterland being the largest area for coal mining while Northern Gjorka is the largest producer of coal power in the country. Coal is produced entirely by private companies with Brí Domhan, Brí Gallahan and Marq Gual producing a majority of coal in the country. These three companies have lobbied heavily for reduction of restrictions on coal, and the end of measures to reduce coal use. Most prominently all three have heavily funded the Coalition for Coal in Gjorka, a lobbyist group based in Gjorka City.
