Captain (Cpt) is a junior officer rank of the Tiroler Ground Forces and Rifles and in both services it ranks above upper lieutenant and below major with an International Ranking Code of OF-2. The rank is equivalent to a Ship-of-the-Line Lieutenant in the Tiroler Navy and to a Flight Lieutenant in the Tiroler Aviation Corps. The captaincy ranks in the navy are considerably more senior (equivalent to the Army ranks of major to colonel) and the ranks should not be confused.
In the 21st-century Tiroler Army, captains are often appointed to be second-in-command of a company or equivalent sized unit of roughly 120 soldiers.
