The 5 June attacks (CreeperianCreeperian: Ataques del 5 de Junio; Creeperian – Iberic: Ատաքփեո դել 5 դե Ջփնիո),[note 1] and also known by the numeronym 5J (), were a series of coordinated terrorist attacks committed by Mara Salvatrucha which occurred across Sur and Ecros on 5 June 2022, targeting various diplomatic missions of Creeperopolis. Eight simultaneous attacks occurred within the nations of Creeperopolis, Andaluzia, El Salvador, Sequoyah, and the State of the Church, and facilities attacked include Creeperian embassies and consulates, the Salisfordian embassy to Creeperopoli.

The first attacks were car bombings at Creeperian diplomatic missions in Ciutat dels Àngels, Galveias, and San Juan Diego, which was followed by a mass shooting in San Salvador at the Salisfordian embassy to Creeperopolis. The final attacks were car bombings at Creeperian diplomatic missions in Tigera and Ithiru, a mass shooting at a Lyoan shopping mall, and two attempted car bombings in San Salvador del Oeste which were thwarted by police.

Various claims were made that the attacks were committed by Creeperian rebel groups, such as the Militarist Front for National Liberation (FMLN) and the Society of Deltinian Brothers (JAD), to Creeperian criminal gangs such as Mara Salvatrucha and Los'Conformistos. The Creeperian government later stated that the attacks were committed by Mara Salvatrucha in response to the suspension of Andaluzia from the Cooperation and Development Coalition (CODECO), as it reportedly had affected the criminal organization's drug trafficking operations.

The attacks resulted in the widespread increase in security at embassies and consulates across the world in fear of any further attacks against the diplomatic missions of CODECO nations. Additionally, some nations, including Creeperopolis, withdrew some of their staff from their diplomatic missions citing safety concerns. The attacks, which killed 171 people and injured 263 more, was the deadliest multi-national terrorist attack in history and the deadliest terrorist attack since the 2020 Bostonia attack.

Background

In October 1979, the Creeperian government declared war on the country's criminal gangs, most notably Mara Salvatrucha, the country's largest criminal gang and de facto paramilitary group. As of June 2022, the war had resulted in between 1.7 and 2.4 million deaths, making it the deadliest ongoing conflict and the third deadliest conflict in Creeperian history after the Creeperian Crusade (1231–1345) and the Creeperian Civil War (1933–1949).

Timeline

Initial car bombings

At 10:58 a.m. TSS, a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) was detonated outside of the Creeperian embassy in Ciutat dels Àngels, El Salvador. The Salvadoran National Police (PNS) ordered an immediate evacuation of the various embassies in the city for the safety of the diplomatic staff and agents of various nations and ordered civilians in the surrounding area to also evacuate. Militarized officers were sent to secure the embassies and search for any further potential VBIEDs in an effort to prevent any further attacks.[1]

The next attack occurred at 11:03 a.m. TSS in Galveias, Andaluzia, when a briefcase bomb was detonated inside of the Creeperian embassy in the city. Embassy staff were evacuated and the embassy's security force was dispatched to secure the embassy and prevent any potential further attacks against the embassy.[2] Approximately one minute after the bomb was detonated in Galveias, VBIED exploded outside of the Creeperian consulate in San Juan Diego, Sequoyah. The Creeperian Army was mobilized to occupy the part of the city where the explosion occurred and assisted in the evacuation of the consulate. Orders were issued to arrest anyone in the area who refused to leave and who bore visible tattoos under suspicion of having gang affiliations.[3]

Salisfordian embassy shooting

At 11:10 a.m. TSS, seven gunmen opened fire at the Salisfordian embassy in San Salvador. The gunmen opened fire at the eastern office building of the embassy complex, attacking several employees at the embassy. By then, the Creeperian government was already made aware about the attacks in El Salvador, Andaluzia, and Sequoyah, and already had the army and Creeperian Imperial Police (PIC) on high alert for any possible attacks in Creeperopolis itself. Upon hearing of the shooting at the embassy of Salisford, the army's Black Division began moving to the embassy complex with the orders to arrest anyone at the facility, and that the Salisfordian embassy employees were also to be removed to a secure location.[4]

When the Black Division arrived, they engaged in a shootout with the gunmen at the embassy. When the army arrived, the gunmen attempted to move from the eastern office building to the ambassador's residence. Soldiers from the Black Division prevented the gunmen from infiltrating the ambassador's residence, and when they tried to retreat back to the eastern office building, they were also prevented from reentering the building too. The Black Division proceeded to kill four of the gunmen and capture the remaining three. After the seven gunmen were subdued, the Black Division helped in the evacuation of the embassy. Jeremías Dueñas Cañas, the mayor of San Salvador, declared martial law in Zacatecoluca, the viceroyalty where many of the embassies to Creeperopolis are located. Additionally, the Creeperian Imperial Guard was placed on high alert for any possible attacks at the San Salvador Imperial Palace and the Palace of the General Courts.[4]

Final attacks

At 11:11 a.m. TSS, a car bomb was detonated outside the Creeperian consulate in Ithiru, and two minutes later, another car bomb was detonated near the Creeperian embassy in Tigera. Additionally, unidentified gunmen opened fire upon civilians at the Marcus Kemoh Engahare Shopping Mall. The Lyoa National Army (LNA) was mobilized across the country to defend the other embassies and consulates located throughout the country.[5]

The final attack which was attempted was thwarted by the National Police of the State of the Church (PNEI) when some of its officers identified two car bombs located outside of the embassies of Salisford and Creeperopolis at 11:27 a.m. TSS. Before the car bombs were identified, the embassies where the car bombs were located, as well as that of Lyoa, were already evacuated for the safety of the staff members inside. The police reported that the car bombs were defused by 12:49 p.m. TSS.[6]

Figures for each of the attacks were issued by the respective law enforcement agency of the nation in which the attack occurred. The attack in San Salvador was the only one to suffer no fatalities, however, 15 Salisfordian embassy staff and 1 Salisfordian civilian were injured during the shooting. Additionally, 4 of the 7 gunmen were killed, with the remaining 3 being injured and captured by the Black Division.[4] The attempted attack in San Salvador del Oeste also suffered no fatalities, but also suffered no injuries.[6]

The Salvadoran National Police reported that 21 people were killed in Ciutat dels Àngels, and an additional 39 more were injured as a result of the car bombing. Most of those killed were embassy staff.[1] In Galveias, the Royal Andaluzian Police (PRA) reported that only 9 embassy staff were killed in the explosion, but that there were still 20 injuries reported, all of whom were Creeperian embassy staff.[2] In San Juan Diego, the Sequoyan National Police reported that 46 people were killed and a further 50 more were injured. The majority of the casualties were Creeperian consulate staff, but there were still several Sequoyan civilians among those killed and injured.[3]

The two attacks in Lyoa were the two deadliest attacks, accounting for 56 percent of all the fatalities and 54 percent of all the casualties among the seven cities affected by the attacks. The attack in Ithiru killed 43 people and injured 63 more, and the majority of the casualties were Lyoan civilians, with only a minority of those killed or injured being consulate staff. In Tigera, 52 people were killed and 75 were injured, with Lyoan civilians again being the majority of those killed or injured.[5]

Responsibility

As the attacks were occurring, some Creeperian military officials believed that the attacks could possibly be the work of one of the various criminal gangs in Creeperopolis, and as a result, they ordered their units responding to the attacks to arrest individuals, especially if they had visible tattoos which could indicate gang affiliations.[3][4] The Lyoan government believed that the attacks in Tigera and Ithiru were committed by Mara Salvatrucha (MS) in conjunction with the far-left Popular Liberation Movement (PLM). David Mutebusi, the group's leader, however, denied responsibility for the attacks and also denied ever working with Mara Salvatrucha.[8]

Responsibility for the attacks has been attributed to Mara Salvatrucha.

Further support for the theory that the attack was committed by a criminal gang was when the Gaceta Creeperiano reported that it received a message from Mara Salvatrucha stating that it committed the attacks in response to the suspension of Andaluzia from the Cooperation and Development Coalition (CODECO), stating that its exclusion from the organization hampers the gang's drug trafficking operations. The Gaceta Creeperiano also received a conflicting claim, reportedly from Los'Conformistos, an ally of Mara Salvatrucha, that it committed the attacks in revenge of the Creeperian government's execution of Joel Ronaldo Nores y Tejón, one of the gang's prominent leaders, in March 2022. The claim from Los'Conformistos has been generally disregarded as the gang does not have as much resources or influence as many of the other criminal gangs in Creeperopolis to carry out attacks at the shear extend of those which were committed.[9]

Additionally, an anonymous claim was made which claimed that the far-left Militarist Front for National Liberation (FMLN) staged the attacks to distract the Creeperian government and Creeperian Armed Forces (FAC) from an upcoming offensive against Creeperian military positions and to capture various towns and villages in the department of Castilliano. Similar anonymous claims were made on behalf of the Deltinian Liberation Army (JTD) and the Society of Deltinian Brothers (JAD). The FMLN later released a statement rejecting the anonymous claim, stating that it was a Creeperian government to blame the FMLN for the attacks. The anonymous claims have been generally disregarded as hoaxes.[9] The left-wing, fake news website El Faro baselessly claimed that the attacks were a false flag operation carried out by the Creeperian Army, the National Intelligence Directorate (DINA), or a pro-government death squad, as justification to attack minority groups within the country.[10]

In a televised speech on the afternoon on 5 June, Creeperian Emperor Alexander II announced that the ministries of defense, intelligence, and law enforcement were investigating the attacks and that the government's current consensus was that the attacks were committed by Mara Salvatrucha in response to Andaluzia's suspension from CODECO, concurring with the claim received by the Gaceta Creeperiano earlier that day. He also stated that the three gunmen captured in San Salvador were sentenced to life imprisonment at the Tuxtla Martínez–Panachor Maximum Correctional Facility (TMP), and warned Mara Salvatrucha that its members would be "harshly punished" and that their "only option is death".[7]

Reactions

Affected nations

  •  Creeperopolis: Creeperian Emperor Alexander II strongly condemned the attacks against the embassies and the shopping mall, calling the attacks a "barbaric" and "inhumane" attack against human life. He threatened Mara Salvatrucha and the other criminal gangs of Creeperopolis that they would all be harshly punished and that death was their "only option". He also compared the attacks to the 18 March attacks of 2020, which were also committed by Mara Salvatrucha and attacked various Creeperian government buildings and a shopping mall. He ordered security at Creeperopolis' various embassies and consulates to be maintained on high alert and recalled ambassadors and consuls to return to Creeperopolis and have an emergency meeting with Minister of External Affairs Nicolás Correa Encarnación regarding the security of the country's diplomatic missions.[7]
  • Template:Country data Lyoa: Lyoan President Alexander Nyarashe condemned the attacks and ordered the immediate rendering of aid to the two cities affected by the attacks. He also ordered the Lyoa National Army to mobilize and protect the various embassies and consulates within the country, further adding that the Creeperian Army would be assisting Lyoan authorities in investigating the attacks. Other Lyoan politicians, such as Kemoh Foday, Joseph Kyundu, Marcil Yantanda, Laurent Tulossa, Olivier Tamboa, Sammy Inikota, Iván Duarte Márquez, and Óscar Yagüe Melléndez also condemned the attacks.[11]
  •  Salisford: Lorenzo Aceto, a spokesman for the Salisfordian government, expressed "shock" at the events which occurred in San Salvador at the Salisfordian embassy. He confirmed that Silvano D'Ascoli, the ambassador of Salisford to Creeperopolis, was among the injured and that he was being treated for minor injuries at a Creeperian hospital. He further expressed concern that the attack at the embassy occurred simultaneously with other attacks at Creeperian diplomatic missions in other nations, and offered condolences to the families of those killed or injured in the attacks.[12]

Other nations

  •  Gjorka: Gjorkan President Carter Morris condemned the attacks and described them as "cowardly". She stated that she ordered the Garda Gjorkan to enforce a curfew in Embassy Row in Gjorka City to thwart any potential attacks at embassies in Gjorka, and that the 2nd Cavalry Company was dispatched to protect the Creeperian embassy. Additionally, non-essential personnel were evacuated from the Gjorkan embassy in San Salvador. The attacks was also condemned by all of Gjorka's major political parties except for the National Social Party (PSN), which did not comment on the attacks.[13]
  •  Paleocacher: Amanda Flanagan, a spokeswoman of the Paleocacherian government, read a message from Paleocacherian President James Fulkerson which condemned the attacks, describing them as "deplorable" and "barbaric", and asserted that "the sanctity of life can never be sacrificed for any political goal". He offered the support of law enforcement and humanitarian aid to the nations affected. He also stated that security at foreign diplomatic missions will be increased and that the Paleocacherian border force was on high alert to prevent any terrorist activities in Paleocacher.[14]
