The 2022 Copa Sur Centennial (Creeperian Spanish – Creeperian: 2022 Ծոպա Սփր Ծենտենարիո),[note 1] also styled as 2022 Creeperopolis (2022 Ծրեեպերօպոլիս), and also known as simply the 2022 Copa Sur, is the ongoing 27th edition of the Copa Sur, the quadrennial international men's football championship of Sur organized by the Confederation of Surian Football (CONFUSUR). The tournament marked the centennial of the Copa Sur, as the first edition occurred in 1922, in which Creeperopolis defeated Castilliano in the final.[note 2]

The tournament's 23 matches were contested in eight stadiums across seven cities in Creeperopolis between 19 June and 17 July 2022, lasting 28 days. All seven members of CONFUSUR participated in the tournament, as well as two invitees from the LFE, for a total of nine national teams. It was the first time since the Siglo XXI Games in 2000 that non-CONFUSUR teams were invited to compete in the tournament, and the first proper tournament since to do so since 1950. In the first phase of the tournament, the nine teams were divided into three robin-round groups, where the three group winners and the two best-ranked runners-up advanced to the second phase. The second phase was a single-elimination knockout tournament, where two rounds of play determined which two teams would compete in the final.

The bidding process for the 2022 Copa Sur Centennial occurred on 1 November 2016. The CONFUSUR Executive Committee voted for the host in a secret ballot (however, the voting results were later leaked in 2019), with a simple majority required to determine the host. In the event of a tie, the bid with the fewest votes will be eliminated. Cospania was ineligible to host, as it was already assigned to host the 2018 Copa Sur.

Of the seven members, the one representing Creeperopolis was ineligible to vote due to being the sole bid cast, leaving a total of six voting members. As Creeperopolis was the only nation to cast a bid to host the tournament, Creeperopolis was selected as the host with five votes in favor and one abstention. As a result of Creeperopolis' selection, Creeperopolis will be ineligible to host the 2026 Copa Sur, while Cospania will again become eligible to host the tournament.

Venues

On 1 February 2021, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which administers all top-level sports stadiums in Creeperopolis, and the National Football Association (ANF), the governing body of professional football in Creeperopolis, announced the final list of eight stadiums to host the tournament's matches. In accordance with CONFUSUR's guidelines for the Copa Sur, each stadium had to have a minimum capacity of at least 45,000, while stadiums to host the final match had to have a minimum capacity of at least 60,000.

The Libertad Stadium in La'Libertad was originally included as one of the host stadiums, however, after the National Football Association's order to expand the stadium's capacity from 50,000 to 65,000 was deemed to not be possible with the amount of time remaining before the tournament, the stadium was removed as a host and replaced with the Sáenz Heredia Memorial Stadium in San Romero in October 2021, after an agreement was reached between the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Football Association, and the Antonio José Sáenz de Heredia University, which administers the stadium for its own sporting programs.

The San Miguel National Stadium, San Alfonso Stadium, and 14 June Stadium were each assigned only group stage matches, while the remaining five stadiums were assigned one knockout stage match each. The San Alfonso Stadium was initially planned to host the quarterfinal, however, the Santiago Matadeltinianos Stadium replaced the San Alfonso Stadium in an effort to give some representation to western Creeperopolis, which is culturally distinct from the rest of the country. The two stadiums in San Romero, the CORNACA Stadium and the Sáenz Heredia Memorial Stadium, were each assigned a semifinal match. The 18 June Stadium was assigned to host the third place match, and the Emperor Adolfo III Stadium, the world's largest stadium with a capacity of 120,000, was assigned to host the final match.

Team base camps

Each team will have access to a "team base camp" for its stay between the matches. The teams will train and reside in these locations during the tournament, and travel to games that took place away from their bases. The twelve teams finalized their base camp with CONFUSUR in March 2022.

Each team had to submit a list of up to twenty-three players, including at least three goalkeepers, to CONFUSUR who will participate in the tournament. The final squads for each nation were finalized in May 2022. If a player of the final squad suffered an injury prior to that team's first game that would keep him out of the entire tournament, another player could be called up to replace him with CONFUSUR's authorization.

Opening ceremony

Events

The opening ceremony for the 2022 Copa Sur Centennial occurred on Sunday, 18 June 2022, in San Salvador. It officially started at 9:38 a.m. SST at the San Salvador Imperial Palace with the beginning of the 19th annual 18 June Liberation Parade, a military parade which glorified the events of the 2003 Creeperian coup d'état which brought the current government to power. The parade nonetheless attracted a crowd of around 215,000 people, a notable increase from the average of 150,000.[3]

At 2:00 p.m. SST, the main events began at the Emperor Adolfo III Stadium. Several musicians, such as Marcos Matos and Valentín Elizalde Valencia, performed at the opening ceremony. As a result of the 5 June attacks earlier in the month, a larger than usual Creeperian National Police (PNC) presence will be in effect throughout the opening ceremony and the entire tournament.[4]

Group stage

The nine teams were divided into three groups of three. The group winners advanced to the semifinals, while the two best ranked group runners-up advanced to the quarterfinal. The third ranked group runner-up and the three last place teams were eliminated from the tournament.

Tiebreakers

The ranking of teams in the group stage was determined as follows:

  1. Points obtained in all group matches (three points for a win, one for a draw, none for a defeat);
  2. Goal difference in all group matches;
  3. Number of goals scored in all group matches;
  4. Points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question;
  5. Goal difference in the matches played between the teams in question;
  6. Number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question;
  7. Fair play points in all group matches (only one deduction could be applied to a player in a single match):
    • Yellow card: –1 points;
    • Indirect red card (second yellow card): –3 points;

Knockout stage

In the knockout stage, if a match was level at the end of regulation, thirty minutes of extra time (two halves of fifteen minutes each) was played and followed, if necessary, by a penalty shoot-out. Marketing

Branding

The tournament's logo was revealed on 19 June 2019 by Romero Rubiales Béjar, the president of the National Football Association. It incorporates the Funes Alvarado Trophy as the primary focus of the logo, with the colors of the various flags of the CONFUSUR members arrayed behind the trophy. Above the trophy read "2022 Copa Sur Centenario" ("2022 Centennial Southern Cup"), with the years of 1922 and 2022 located on either side of the text, in reference to the tournament occurring 100 years after the inaugural 1922 Copa Sur which was also hosted by Creeperopolis. Below the trophy read "CONFUSUR" and "2022 Creeperópolis" for the tournament's organizing confederation and host nation. The logo was changed in October 2021 from the Iberic Script to the Creeperian Script, however, the translation of the logo remained the same. The change was approved by CONFUSUR, however, the change caused some controversy.

Controversies

Host selection criticism

The selection of Creeperopolis to host the 2022 Copa Sur Centennial was criticized by some non-Surian politicians, businesspeople, and activists. Much of the criticism against Creeperopolis hosting came as a result of the nation's history of racism against non-Surians and within Creeperian professional football, alleged human rights abuses by the Creeperian government, widespread discrimination against LGBT people, Islam, and atheism in wider Creeperian society, and government authoritarianism and anti-democratic tendencies. Additionally, the inclusion of the annual 18 June military parade in the opening ceremony also received criticism for directly introducing politics, mainly anti-democracy and anti-communist propaganda, and militarism into the sporting event. Safety was also raised as a concern, as the tournament began just a little over two weeks after the 5 June attacks killed 171 people in coordinated attacks against Creeperian diplomatic missions across the world.[4]

The Tiroler company Co-operatives Tirol refused to sponsor the tournament, citing "authoritarian tendencies" of the Creeperian government. Additionally, various Labour politicians criticized Creeperopolis' hosting, also citing government authoritarianism and alleged human rights abuses. Orlando Hernández Alvarado, a Creeperian political exile in Paleocacher, also expressed his opposition to and criticism of the host selection, baselessly claiming through El Faro, his online fake news newspaper, that Creeperopolis bribed officials from the other CONFUSUR members to not bid against, and instead, vote for Creeperopolis.[20] Other Creeperian exiles in Paleocacher organized protests, numbering around 5,000 people, outside of Creeperopolis' embassy in Gardena and consulate in Liberty City against the government's perceived persecution of its political opposition.

Sequoyan participation

On 29 April 2020, the Sequoyan senate voted 6–4 on a bill, the Native Servitude Act, which legalized slavery, and the bill was signed into law by President Odysseus Stanford later that day.[21] The law was universally condemned by the international community which introduced sanctions against Sequoyah, and the nation was expelled from the Cooperation and Development Coalition (CODECO) on 2 May 2020.[22]

On 3 May 2020, both CONFUSUR and the Terraconservan Cup announced that Sequoyah would be banned indefinitely from competing in both the Copa Sur and the Terraconservan Cup. Additionally, CONFUSUR banned Sequoyah from casting a bid to host the 2026 Copa Sur and from voting in the bidding process, and suspended the nation from competing in the 2022 Copa Sur Centennial. Although Sequoyah repealed the Native Servitude Act on 9 May 2020[23] and formally outlawed slavery on 30 June 2020 with the signing of the Treaty of Freemont, which also included Stanford's resignation from the presidency,[24] CONFUSUR continued to maintain that Sequoyah was banned from participation in the 2022 Copa Sur Centennial.

On 5 December 2020, the CODECO Mission in Sequoyah (COMISEQ) initiated a military intervention in Sequoyah following the start of the Sequoyan Civil War.[25] On 4 January 2021, interim President William Adama resigned and the CODECO-backed Augustus Young was installed as provisional president. Young declared an end to the civil war against forces supporting former president-elect Edward Calhoun on 21 May 2021, and announced that he was extending his term for one year, after which, the new democratically elected Sequoyan government will assume power.[26]

After the end of the civil war and Young's assurance that Sequoyah will return to democracy by 21 May 2022, CONFUSUR lifted its suspension of Sequoyah on 29 June 2021 and permitted the nation to participate in the 2022 Copa Sur Centennial. CONFUSUR's decision was criticized by some non-Surian politicians and activists, but their decision stood and eventually, on 21 May 2022, the new Sequoyan government, consisting of co-Presidents Young and Rushing Waters and Vice President Ernesto Castro Aldana, assumed office after the 2022 Sequoyan presidential election.[27]

Change of the logo's script

In March 2021, the Cortes Generales, the legislature of Creeperopolis, voted to reinstate the Creeperian Script as the nation's official script, replacing the Iberic Script after over 1,000 years of being in use.[28] As a result of the change, the National Football Association issued a petition to CONFUSUR to change the tournament's official logo from the Iberic Script to the Creeperian Script to better reflect Creeperian culture. Despite initial resistance from CONFUSUR, the confederation eventually agreed to change the logo, and the new logo was unveiled on 1 October 2021. The change was criticized by some sports commentators, who stated that the change would make reading the logo more difficult as the script is extremely different to that used by the rest of the nations competing the tournament.

As a part of the opening ceremony, the annual 18 June Liberation Parade was advertized and marketed as a part of the tournament's celebrations. The parade was a military parade which was held every year since 2004 on 18 June to commemorate the events of the 2003 Creeperian coup d'état. The coup, which killed 663 people and led to the disappearance of thousands more through 2004, resulted in the overthrow of the government of Emperor Alfonso VI, known as the Alfonsisto, by the Creeperian Armed Forces. The coup installed Alexander II as Alfonso VI's successor to the throne of Creeperopolis, significantly increased the influence of the military in Creeperian politics, and led to an overall increase in human rights abuses in Creeperopolis as a direct result of the coup.[3]

Many foreign journalists, sports commentators, and politicians criticized the inclusion of the military parade in the events of the tournament, claiming that it inappropriately mixes politics and militarism with an international sporting tournament. It has also been described as an attempt to flex Creeperopolis' military capabilities, glorify the military's previous actions, and normalize militarism and glorification of the military by attaching the parade to the tournament, which would result in it being viewed by more people; the parade did indeed experience an increase in attendance and viewership than usual, most probably as a result of its promotion with the upcoming tournament.[3]

Salisford v Andaluzia violence

The third match of the tournament between Salisford and Andaluzia on 21 June 2022 was anticipated to be a very emotional match, as the two nations had recently had a significant increase in political and diplomatic tensions between them. The Andaluzian government accused the Salisfordian government of trafficking drugs through the oil company CRI S.p.A., leading to the Andaluzian government nationalizing the company's assets in Andaluzia.[29] Disputed between the two nations led to the hosting of the 2nd Emergency Meeting of the Cooperation and Development Coalition in Creeperopolis on 13 May 2022, which resulted in Andaluzia's expulsion from the Cooperation and Development Coalition.[30]

When the first match between the two nations began, the Creeperian National Police already had an increased presence in the CORNACA Stadium where the match was occurring in anticipation of prevention violence from the fans in attendance, despite the Salisfordian and Andaluzian fans already being physically separated from each other. A few pitch invasions were attempted by both Andaluzian and Salisfordian fans, however, the police stopped the would-be streakers from running onto the field. Fans also threw garbage onto the field throughout the match. Booing was heard during the playing of the national anthems.[18]

In the 74th minute, an Andaluzian goal was called off by Creeperian referee Alexander Bolívar Nariño, causing outrage among the Andaluzian players and fans who believed that the goal should have stood. A fight began between Andaluzian forward Osvaldo de Sá and Salisfordian defender Santino Boni, leading to a broader fight occurring between the remaining players. As the fight escalated, the police stormed the field to break up the fight, and also surrounded the field to prevent fans from storming the field. After the fight, Bolívar Nariño issued nine cards: four yellows, two second yellows, and three reds, resulting in five players being sent off. The players sent off were de Sá, Boni, Salisfordian defender Leo Sabato, Andaluzian forward Vinícius Peres and Andaluzian midfielder Micael Morais.[18]

Following the match, CONFUSUR released a statement handing down punitive actions against the two teams involved the spectators who were in attendance. CONFUSUR banned all spectators from attending the two teams' rematch on 30 June 2022. Additionally, Salisford was forced to forfeit its winnings for the match (₡20 million), and both teams will also forfeit any winnings earned from their upcoming matches. Both teams were also fined an additional ₡5 million by the confederation for the violence which unfolded during the match.[18]

Anti-Sequoyan online racial abuse

After the Rakeoian 2–1 victory over Salisford on matchday 3, many Salisfordian internet users make anti-Sequoyan racist posts and remarks berating Edward Lee, the Sequoyan match official of the Rakeo v Salisford match. Lee was subject to racial slurs and anti-Sequoyan memes being posted on websites such as Leerlo, Dice!, Shichan, Twitter, and TuVu. The phrase, "Do squgs even know the rules of football?" trended on Salisfordian Dice! and Twitter communities. The online abuse was condemned by CONFUSUR and the Sequoyan Football Federation, which stated that "racism is never justified and has no place in football". No further action was taken against the fans, however, as fans had already been banned from Salisford's next game against Andaluzia. Further online racial attacks against Sequoyans in general occurred after Sequoyah defeated the State of the Church on 2 July 2022 to win Group B and advance to the semifinals.
