The 2022 Confederacy of Layem raid, often shortened to simply the Layem raid, was an operation against the region Confederacy of Layem. After its founder was deleted, and later declared Delete On Sight,[note 3] the region was selected for destruction for promoting bigotry, offsite harassment, and infiltration. The regional World Assembly Delegate put a password on the region to prevent the quickly assembling task force from raiding the Confederacy of Layem, so an 'offensive' liberation Security Council (SC) proposal was drafted and put to the World Assembly for vote.

Following the passage of SC Resolution #398 Liberate Confederacy Of Layem and removal of the regional password on 18 May 2022, a multilateral ANTIFA coalition of 111 updaters jumped from Resuscitation, overwhelming the 27 endorsements retained by former delegate Baaas.[1] The region was held under a piling occupation to ban remaining natives until 30 May 2022.

Background

Layem was already controversial across NationStates for a variety of reasons. It had a troubled start, being created after the Democratic Union of Assembled States's founder account was deleted for undisclosed reasons. Historical documentation implies this was related to Maur (then Mauricil)'s RMB posts, presumably in the context of rule breaking. In 2018, 2019, and 2021, spammers from Layem posted large quantities of spam, often consisting of racial or homophobic slurs, to various regions' discord servers.[2][3][4] In 2020, logs were released showing Layem's discord server contained antisemetic and homophobic content.[5] Due to NationStates' rules, which bans defamatory content, discussion of this character cannot be easily discussed onsite.[6]

In 2021 – 2022

2022 saw a marked uptick in the Confederacy of Layem's activity. The Brotherhood of Green, an alliance with the similarly reviled Sanctum was signed in February, in spite of charges that the treaty had been plagiarized from Europeia's template.[7][8] In the same month, Confederacy of Layem, Sanctum, Institute of Cellulose, and The Alliance of Eros joined the Grand Confederacy of Regions.[9] Following the raid of Sanctum, Layem founded Trans, saying that the use of an LGBTQ theme on the formerly catholic region was desecration requiring retaliation.[10]

Final days

Maur stated his intention that if his region were raided, he would "make another region and get 300-500 people in it like I'm doing now".[11] While getting more involved in gameplay, Maur founded the region Concord, though it isn't clear if this was meant as redoubt against a raid on the Confederacy of Layem, or if it was meant to serve as a staging ground for more infiltrator discord alts, as the region Bredane was.[12] The founder account for the Confederacy of Layem, Layem, was deleted by the moderation team on 14 May for violations of the longstanding violations of commercialization rule, after a player reported them for advertising payouts onsite for offsite activities[note 4], in Layamite recruitment telegrams.[13]

Knowing that this made the region insecure, Maur moved to funnel Layem's population towards Concord.[14] Maur's DOS declaration on 15 May resulted in Concord itself becoming unsecure, which was taken advantage of by coalition forces led by The League in the near contemporaneous 2022 Concord raid.[15]

Raid

While there were some early movers as the password was removed, the raid began in earnest at the 11:17:01 PM CDT of 18 May. Over a hundred updaters jumped to Confederacy of Layem. No attempt to repulse the attack was conducted. As update occurred, control of the Confederacy of Layem by Layemites was toppled. 30 May 2022 marked the end of operations, with a telegram being sent by Miravana for participants to draw down.

Aftermath

Interregional reaction

Most of gameplay participated or facilitated the raid, and was thus in support. The major detractors[note 5] of the operation and its methods included Nordic Lands and the region NationStates. The delegate of NationStates is principally opposed to the use of liberations, seeing the use of liberations as cheating, and/or as infringing on the natural rights of a WA Delegate. Nordic Lands is a haven of former layemite and Sanctum members, the most vocal of whom see the raid as an infringement on freedom of speech.

Moderator actions

16 May – A member of the Confederacy of Layem flamed a number of users in a 'suicide by mod' and had their account deleted.[16]
18 May – A member of the Confederacy of Layem posted a video from a DOS'd player, which was removed.[17]

Forums

In gameplay, nine organizations set their thread titles to "VICTORY" in parody of Layem's gameplay thread following the successful first night of the operation.

Notes

  1. Xoriet provided this figure for Europeia's radio show
  2. Mirvana provided a figure of total natives at 'around 100' for Europeia's radio show. After the radio show, Mirvana stated that 98 natives were banned with seven remaining.
  3. DOS stands for Delete On Sight, and is reserved by NationStates moderation for severe or long term violations of site rules. Users that have been declared DOS cannot use the site, and will be automatically deleted on discovery.
  4. Payouts advertised onsite for participating in Layem's offsite activities involved items of real monetary value, such as games, gift cards, and Discord Nitro
  5. Defined as 6%+ of all votes against SC#398.
