Overthrow of Cheasequah Waya

On 28 May 2020, Waya and Vice President Atsadi Onacona were overthrown and arrested by left-wing factions of the Sequoyan Armed Forces in a coup d'état. The coup was denounced by CODECO and right-wing factions of the military. The military appointed Admiral Diwali Wesa as interim president. Sequoyah was expelled from CODECO on 1 June 2020.

Protests against the military

Anti-government protestors demanded the restoration of Waya as president and demanded Wesa's resignation. The military government agreed to hold new presidential elections in October 2020 to elect a president to finish the remainder of the 2020 to 2026 presidential term.

October 2020 presidential election

During the October 2020 presidential election, Usti Atagulkalu of the Federalist Party was elected president. He promised to readmit Sequoyah to CODECO. Wesa promised to respect the results of the election.

Diwali Wesa's self coup

On 6 November 2020, Wesa ordered Atagulkalu's arrest and declared that the results of the October 2020 election were annulled. The following day, right-wing factions of the Sequoyan military launched a rebellion against the Sequoyan government, beginning the Sequoyan Civil War.
