The 1959 general strike in Tirol was a general strike that lasted eight days, from 6 to 14 December 1959. It was called by the General Confederation of Trade Unions (CGS) in an unsuccessful attempt to force the Tiroler government to act to prevent the laying off of workers and enforced wage cuts affecting the mining and railway companies in Tirol. In total 1.4 million workers participated in the strike, mostly in the transport and mining sectors. The government was fairly well prepared, and enlisted middle class volunteers to maintain essential services. There were few cases of violence on the picket line and following rumours of the end of the Ajaki–Reykani War, the CGS called off the strike.
