A vote of no confidence was held in 1706 against the Premiership of Simón Garrido Barrios in Castilliano.

Background

In the 1705 Castillianan general election, Simón Garrido Barrios' Laborist Party won 39 seats, beating the long established National Conservative Party and National Liberal Party. The National Liberal Party under Fruto Chamorro Pérez sided with Garrido Barrios' party to form the government for the 1705 to 1710 term.

In the first year of Garrido Barrios' Premiership, the nation felt an immediate downfall in the economy as his radical socialist reforms inspired by Qarl Marx began to fail. Historians cite the causes for the economic downturn to resistance by Pablo Correa Costa's National Conservative Party, resistance from Queen Isabela II, and the poor implementation of the policies by the National Liberal Party and Laborist Party.

On May 2, 1706, National Liberal Party leader Fruto Chamorro Pérez called for a vote of no confidence against Garrido Barrios' government, shocking many that a member of the Garrido Barrios government would hold a vote to remove Garrido Barrios and likely hand over power to the National Conservative Party. Pablo Correa Costa came out in support of the vote and the month long process bagan.

Aftermath

The vote passed with 56 voting aye, 43 voting nay, and 1 abstention. According to the consitution, Garrido Barrios ceased to be Prime Minister and the leader of the second largest party, Pablo Correa Costa of the National Conservative Party, became Prime Minister. Correa Costa went on to remain as Prime Minister until 1730.

The day after the vote, the Laborist Party was dissolved and Garrido Barrios retired from politics. Many Laborist Party members joined the National Liberal Party following the party's dissolution.
